The People
Brian Mullany is a fourth-generation vigneron and one of the people behind the Mullany family’s long-standing connection to the Hilltops region. His understanding of the land, and the diversity of varieties it can produce, has been shaped by generations of farming and a willingness to explore what different sites and varieties can offer.
Our relationship with Brian is built around that shared curiosity and trust - a belief that great wines begin with great fruit, and that the best approach is often to let the vineyard and variety speak for themselves.
The Land
Bit of Heaven Vineyard sits near Wombat in the Hilltops, where the Sangiovese vines are planted in red sand and shale amongst decomposing granite. Planted in 1998, but these 8 year old grafts, coupled with the free draining soils, gives the Sangiovese alovely
balance of bright fruit, savoury character and natural acidity.
There is something particularly suited to Sangiovese in this part of the world - the warmth needed to develop generous red fruit, balanced by the cool nights that help retain freshness, perfume and structure.
The Wine
The 2024 Bit of Heaven Sangiovese is all about bright red fruit, perfume and savoury spice. De-stemmed fruit was fermented with light extraction work over three weeks, allowing the wine to retain the vibrant character of Sangiovese while building gentle structure and texture.
There are notes of red currant, sour cherry and kirsch, with subtle floral and fruit-cake spice adding complexity. The palate is juicy and bright, with fine acidity and soft, savoury tannins providing shape without weighing down the fruit.
The wine was matured for 14 months in French oak barriques, with 15% new oak, adding a gentle layer of spice and texture while allowing the red-fruited character of the vineyard to remain at the forefront. This time in barriques has been integral to integrate the fine tannin profile that carry's the wine through a long, dry finish.
